Mixed Media Tree by Sarali

Sugar
Day 7 — February 16

This art tree by Sarali is a burst of energy and celebration with its dimensional layers of leaves, and celebrations are when we indulge in treats and sweets!

With that in mind, I compiled a top ten list of favorite Things With Sugar that Elizabeth and I enjoyed together. I like to bake, and Elizabeth loved to eat the things I baked. With the exception of Napoleons, Gateaux Sugar Cookies, and Almond Croissants, these are favorite homemade treats:

10. Almond Toffee

9. French Napoleon

8. Gateaux Bakery Sugar Cookies

7. Almond Spritz Cookies

6. Cremé Brûlée

5. Palisade Peach Pie

4. Almond Croissants

3. Rhubarb Pie

2. Key Lime Pie

1. German Chocolate Cake

That German Chocolate Cake is #1 meant that it was our go-to treat for every birthday or special occasion. A box mix is just fine for the cake because it’s the homemade coconut-pecan frosting that is so wonderfully indulgent in both taste and texture, using a recipe from my Grandma Klug—actually from her 1980 Amana Radarange Microwave Cookbook:

Day 7: the art of love and loss
view all posts at kentmueller.com

February 10, 2020, was the day my wife, Elizabeth Izant, entered the hospital. She and I were on a hopeful journey following her heart transplant five months prior. On March 1, she entered hospice and died March 11. This series is not about her medical journey. This is about sharing stories and reflections about our life together. In our 29 years of marriage, we collected a piece of art or two each year, often in celebration of our marriage anniversary. Each day from February 10 to March 11, I will be sharing an image of that art. And a story.
