Peace
Day 22 — March 2

Elizabeth loved water. She was confident and comfortable in the water, having been a swimmer in high school and college. Me, not so much.

But we both loved vacations by the water. Each of these coastal places conjures up a vivid and treasured memory...

Sea Island, Georgia
St. Augustine, Florida
Greenwich, Connecticut
Marco Island, Florida
Santa Diego, California
Little Compton, Rhode Island
University Place, Washington
Kaanapali, Maui, Hawaii
Hilton Head, South Carolina
Newport, Rhode Island
St. Petersburg, Florida
Boston, Massachusetts
Brewster, Massachusetts
Cape Nedick, Maine

These represent places of peace and tranquility. We always looked forward to when we might spend time at the beach, walk barefoot in the sand, or enjoy a seafood feast overlooking the water. On our very last seaside vacation in Maine, we were on a quest for the perfect lobster roll. It was a good excuse to eat a lot of them.

I think of these places today, because they always felt like a sigh of relief. A well deserved rest. Peace.

And it was one year ago that Elizabeth entered the Denver Hospice after three extraordinarily difficult weeks in the hospital. Accompanied by my sister-in-law, Phyllis, I wept tears of gratitude for this beautiful and holy place where we could be with Elizabeth for her final days.

It was—and is—a place of peace.

Day 22: the art of love and loss

February 10, 2020, was the day my wife, Elizabeth Izant, entered the hospital. She and I were on a hopeful journey following her heart transplant five months prior. On March 1, she entered hospice and died March 11. This series is not about her medical journey. This is about sharing stories and reflections about our life together. In our 29 years of marriage, we collected a piece of art or two each year, often in celebration of our marriage anniversary. Each day from February 10 to March 11, I will be sharing an image of that art. And a story.
